American Recorder Technologies review 2026

American Recorder Technologies is a go-to for studio techs, audiophiles, and reel-to-reel hobbyists who need hard-to-find parts like leader tape, splicing tape, reel boxes, hold-downs, and connector cleaning tools. Casual buyers looking for a single USB cable can shop anywhere. Check whether the item ships via USPS or UPS Ground only, since cleaning kits with gas dusters can't go by air.

About American Recorder Technologies

American Recorder Technologies (ART) describes itself as a boutique manufacturer and distributor of audio, video, music, and photo products, founded in 1977. The about page is signed by president Alan Adelstein, who says the company keeps in-house, live customer support for sales and technical questions. Alongside its own American Recorder branded gear, it carries RTM analog audio tape, Glyph storage, and CAIG Labs DeoxIT contact cleaner.

What's in the catalog

This is a deep parts-and-supplies catalog, with more than 1,500 products in our data and a median price of $19.99. Cables lead with 188 listings, followed by drum accessories, adapters, connectors, LED indicator signs, tools, and turntable and LP accessories. Prices for small parts are low: bulk 24 awg OFC balanced microphone cable runs $0.99 (per unit as listed), a solder-type 1/4" TRS connector is $3.49, a 50 ohm BNC pass-through panel mount is $2.99, and stainless wall plates with XLR jacks are $9.99 to $14.95. The Designer Series XLR Microphone Cables come in sleeve patterns like Snakeskin, Reggae, and USA for $14.99.

The analog tape section is the real draw. You'll find 1/2 inch transparent leader tape ($24.95), Pro Splicing Tape in several widths ($19.95 to $29.95), single 10.5 inch reel boxes ($5.99) or a 20-pack ($99.80), a 7 inch six-window plastic tape reel ($24.95), reel-to-reel hold-downs ($29.95 to $44.95), and the Deluxe Tape Recorder Cleaning Kit with a CO2 gas duster ($119.95). The TT (Bantam) Plug and Jack Cleaning Tool with DeoxIT ($24.95) is aimed at patch bay maintenance. Higher-end items include Glyph CFexpress Type B cards and readers ($149.95 to $259.90) and the AllCast all-in-one streaming kit with webcam, ring light, mic, and stand ($199.95, down from $499.95).

How it compares

Few stores stock this mix of vintage and current gear in one place. Generic marketplaces may beat ART on a basic USB-C cable, but leader tape, reel boxes, hold-downs, and vintage tubes like the 6J1 are hard to source elsewhere.

Shipping, returns, and warranty

Orders placed before 12 p.m. PST typically ship the same day, though made-to-order cables and LED signs can take 2 to 3 business days. Shipping costs appear at checkout, overnight delivery is continental US only, and chemicals and gas cartridges go UPS Ground only. The store isn't liable for shipping damage, so you file claims with the carrier. Eligible items can be returned within 30 days in original packaging with a return authorization, shipped prepaid by you, and a minimum 20% restocking fee may apply for damage or missing parts. Warranty coverage is strong: one year on general ART products, lifetime on ART audio and video cables, and 30 days on batteries, chemicals, cleaning products, bulbs, and tapes. Support is available by phone at 805-527-9580 or by email.

What stands out

  • Lifetime cable warranty. ART-branded audio and video cables carry a limited lifetime guarantee.
  • Analog tape supplies. Leader and splicing tape, reels, reel boxes, and hold-downs in many sizes.
  • Since 1977. A long-running company with in-house, live customer support.
  • Same-day shipping. Orders before noon PST usually ship that day.
