About health services & testing brands
Online health services sell a document or a result, not a product, which changes how you shop. The key question is whether the person you need to satisfy (an employer, an airline, an insurer, an embassy) will accept a private doctor's letter, and that is worth confirming before you pay, because refunds generally end once the doctor has done the work.
ZoomDoc Health is a UK service for private, non-NHS documents: sick notes, pregnancy fit-to-fly and fit-to-cruise letters, travel-with-medication letters, GP referrals and home health tests, priced in pounds. It suits people who need paperwork fast without booking a GP appointment; it does not replace ongoing care or a diagnosis.
We also list ORIG3N, an at-home health and DNA testing brand, but its online shop displayed an unavailable page when we checked, with no tests, prices or policies visible. We cannot suggest ordering there until it publishes those details.
How to shop for online health services and at-home testing
Confirm acceptance first. Before buying any private medical letter, ask the organization that needs it whether it accepts a letter from a private online doctor, and what it must state. Airlines often have specific wording and timing requirements for pregnancy fit-to-fly letters (commonly needed from around 28 weeks, with limits depending on single or multiple pregnancy). Employers may have their own rules about self-certification periods and fit notes. Embassies can require specific formats or approved physicians for visa health certificates.
Know what a letter is and is not. A doctor's letter confirms a clinical opinion at a point in time. It does not create an ongoing doctor-patient relationship, and for anything requiring diagnosis, treatment or follow-up, you still need your GP or an urgent care service. In the UK, NHS fit notes are free from your GP after seven days of illness; a private letter is a convenience you pay for.
Check the clinicians. A legitimate UK service should name its doctors or state that they are registered with the General Medical Council, and you can check registration on the GMC's public register. Look for a registered business address and a clear complaints process.
Turnaround and timing. Look at the stated turnaround and whether express processing costs extra. For travel letters, check how many days before departure the airline wants the letter dated, so you do not order too early.
At-home tests. Find out which laboratory processes samples and whether it holds recognized accreditation (UKAS in the UK, CLIA in the US). Check what is measured, sample type (finger-prick, saliva, urine), and whether results come with a clinician review or just numbers. For DNA tests, read the privacy policy closely: who stores your genetic data, whether it is shared with third parties or researchers, and how to request deletion.
Refund rules. Service refunds are narrow. ZoomDoc refunds in full only if it cannot issue the letter; once a doctor has provided it, no refund is possible. Make sure your details, dates and travel information are correct before submitting.
Budget. Simple letters typically cost tens of pounds; referrals and comprehensive home test panels cost more. Compare against free NHS options where timing allows.
Which brand fits which buyer
- UK workers who need a sick note fast without a GP appointment: ZoomDoc Health.
- Pregnant travelers needing a fit-to-fly or fit-to-cruise certificate: ZoomDoc Health, after checking the airline's wording rules.
- Travelers carrying prescription medication abroad, or visa applicants needing a certificate of good health: ZoomDoc Health, confirming the embassy accepts private letters.
- At-home DNA testing shoppers: ORIG3N's store was unavailable when we checked, so choose a service that publishes its lab details and privacy policy up front.
