Price increases vs cuts

We log every price change our sync sees. From tomorrow this section shows how many prices stores raised versus cut, so you can see whether "Black Friday" prices were inflated first.

The "permanent sale" effect

6 of the 133 stores show a compare-at price on at least 90% of their in-stock items, every day. Those 2,146 items make up 19.7% of all markdowns we count. When nearly everything in a store is "on sale" all the time, the sale price is effectively the regular price, so a Black Friday markdown from that store only means something if it goes deeper than usual.

How we collect this data

Our sync reads each store's public product catalog throughout the day: current price, the store's own "compare at" price, and stock. Every time a price changes we log it, and once a day we take a snapshot. An item counts as marked down when its compare-at price is at least 5% above the current price; we only count in-stock items priced between $1 and $50,000. Stores set their own compare-at prices, so a markdown is the store's claim, not proof of a historic low, which is exactly why we also count price increases. Figures cover the 133 stores Scouted Brands researches, not the whole market.

Frequently asked questions

Are Black Friday prices really lower?
Often, but not always. Across the 68,153 in-stock products we track, 16% are marked down today with an average markdown of 30%. Compare that with the figures on Black Friday itself (November 27, 2026) to see whether a "deal" is really deeper than an ordinary week.
Do stores raise prices before Black Friday?
We started logging every price change on October 11, 2026, so this page will show how many prices go up versus down in the weeks before Black Friday. It updates daily.
What counts as "on sale" here?
An item counts as marked down when the store itself lists a "compare at" price at least 5% above its current price. That compare-at price is set by the store, so a markdown is a claim by the store, not proof of a historic low.
Which category has the most items on sale?
Food & Drink: 87.2% of in-stock items are marked down today.
