Buying a laser engraver is really buying into a system: the machine, the software, the replacement parts you will need in year two, and the materials you will feed it every week. That is why we rank brands here on more than machine prices. We reviewed two of the best-known hobby and small-business laser brands, xTool and AtomStack, and they win for different reasons.

1. xTool: best overall laser engraver brand
Best for: Etsy and craft-fair sellers, first-time buyers who want an enclosed machine, and anyone who wants one store for the laser, the jigs, and the blanks.
xTool has the widest selection and the strongest reputation of the two. The store covers nearly every laser type a small maker would consider, and its about page says more than 405,000 machines have been connected since 2021. The site draws an estimated 1.9 million visits a month.
The real advantage is the closed loop. Many xTool materials are labeled for a specific machine and, per the site, come with ready-set parameters. If you own an M2, the M2 CleanCut Panel ($39) protects the base plate when cutting through soft materials. If you own an F2 Ultra UV, the flat-bottom K9 crystal ball ($21.99) is a matched blank for inner engraving. That removes a lot of the trial-and-error test cuts that eat material on other brands.
The catch is the return fee table. You get 30 days, but only the first 14 are fee-free, and you pay return shipping either way. From day 15 to 30, a non-defective return costs 10% to 30% of the order total, and a machine must have lasered fewer than 50 times. Materials and filters bought separately cannot be returned. The warranty text we captured does not state the coverage period, so confirm it for your machine before you buy.
2. AtomStack: best for value and replacement parts
Best for: budget hobbyists, owners who want to repair rather than replace, and buyers comfortable with refurbished gear.
AtomStack's catalog is mostly parts, and that is its strength. Belts, limit switch boards, and stepper motors are $10, a 32-bit mainboard is $29, a 6W blue laser module is $69, and an A24 replacement module is $269. Many parts list exact model compatibility. Diode lasers wear and belts stretch, so being able to buy the exact part directly keeps a machine running for years.
On the machine side, the M4 Pro ($1,149) is the standout in our notes. It combines a 10W 455nm diode for wood, leather, and coated metals with a 2W 1064nm infrared source for bare metal and plastics, in a 100 x 100 mm galvo field at up to 5,000 mm/s. That small field suits tags, jewelry, and batch gifts, not signs. The refurbished section has the lowest entry prices, such as a refurbished Swift Mini from $45 for one configuration, but that listing has no specs or refurbishment grading, and refurbished items carry only a three-month warranty.
The catch: every return needs an RMA form first, unopened machines must come back within 15 days, and you pay return shipping plus a 10% service charge unless AtomStack made the error. Pre-order machines can take 30 to 90 days.
Which laser type do you actually need?
Brand matters less than picking the right laser source. This is general laser knowledge, not brand-specific:
- Diode (blue, around 450 to 455nm): the budget entry point. Engraves wood, leather, cardboard, and coated or anodized metal; cuts thin wood and acrylic in darker colors. Struggles with clear acrylic and bare metal.
- CO2 (10,600nm): cuts and engraves wood, acrylic (including clear), glass surfaces, and leather faster and cleaner than diodes. Larger and pricier.
- Infrared or fiber (around 1,064nm): marks bare metals and many plastics. Small marking areas. This is what the IR module on the AtomStack M4 Pro adds.
- UV: fine marking on glass, crystal, and plastics, and inner engraving inside K9 crystal. Standard diode and CO2 machines cannot inner-engrave.
If you only want one machine for mixed crafts, a diode laser is the usual start. If you sell metal tags or jewelry, look at infrared or a dual-light machine. If you sell engraved crystal, you need UV.
Matching brand to buyer
- Total beginner who wants the easiest path: xTool. Matched materials and settings shorten the learning curve, and the 14-day fee-free window gives you time to decide.
- Budget hobbyist who likes to tinker: AtomStack. Lower entry prices and a parts store that lets you fix your own machine.
- Small business engraving metal gifts in batches: AtomStack M4 Pro, if the 100 x 100 mm field fits your products.
- Crystal and awards shop: xTool. The K9 crystal blanks, gift boxes, LED bases, and the 40-ball studio kit ($967.99) are built around its UV line.
- Already own another brand: you can still use xTool's materials, but you lose the matched settings. AtomStack parts only fit AtomStack machines.
Budget for safety
Every laser engraver needs proper eye protection rated for its wavelength, plus ventilation or an enclosure with fume extraction. Laser smoke from wood, leather, and plastics is harmful, and some materials, like PVC and vinyl, release corrosive and toxic gases and should never be lasered. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and never leave a running laser unattended. Check each model's manual for what safety equipment is included.
Verdict
xTool is the better all-around brand: wider laser selection, a stronger reputation, and the most useful materials ecosystem in the hobby space. Decide within 14 days, though, or returns get expensive. AtomStack is the better value pick for hands-on owners who want cheap parts and are fine with stricter return terms.
