The short answer
We reviewed two brands in this category, and only one sells anything you can buy today.
| Rank | Brand | Best for | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | GameGearMaster | Game masters who like to craft their own 3D terrain | TERRAINO build manuals, templates, textures and videos, $4.99 to $99.99 |
| 2 | Voila Stickers | Not a store | A blog of sticker and label how-to guides |
If you want dungeon terrain for D&D, Pathfinder or 28mm wargames and you enjoy making things, GameGearMaster is the clear pick. If you came here looking for stickers, Voila Stickers isn't a shop when we checked, so skip ahead to the sticker buying checklist below.
1. GameGearMaster: best overall, best DIY terrain system
Best for: DMs and wargamers who want a lot of terrain on a small budget and don't mind building it.
GameGearMaster is the home of TERRAINO, a click-together modular terrain system for standard 28mm miniatures. Its founder, Jake Karlsmark, started the site in 2018 after building his first pieces from Dollar Tree materials while running games for friends. The company describes itself as two employees plus contract artists, writers and developers.
The key thing to understand is what you're paying for. You buy instructions, not terrain. Each download is a set of watermarked PDFs with templates, textures and tutorial videos. You supply the foamboard, glue and craft paint, and you do the cutting. The brand pitches the result as pennies per piece in materials, which is the appeal compared with buying finished resin or plastic terrain.
The tiers
- Essential Core ($44.99, down from $49.98): the entry system. Start here.
- Complete Core ($69.99): the middle tier.
- Expanded Core ($99.99): the largest core package, for builders committed to a full collection.
- Theme add-ons ($44.99 each): Strongholds (castles and catacombs), Buildings (taverns and towns), Modular Floors and Decorations.
- Adventures: The Frozen Temple of Ranzakka ($19.99), a 5e adventure for levels 2 to 6 with player and DM maps, and The Fugitive with a Sewers add-on ($24.99).
- 3D-printable grid tile jig ($4.99), an STL file for builders with a printer.
Our product reviews flagged that the core tier listings don't break down their contents, so compare tiers on the brand's site before choosing. The Decorations add-on also reuses the floor-tile description word for word, so confirm what it includes.
Policies
Downloads arrive instantly by link and email, and all of them include free updates. Digital purchases can be refunded within 14 days, which is unusually generous for digital goods and gives you time to try a build. Physical items ship within 3 business days with free untracked US shipping over $40; there is no international shipping for physical goods. Support is reachable by phone on weekdays, by email and through a form.
Who should skip it
Anyone who wants finished terrain out of the box. TERRAINO takes time, a cutting mat, a sharp blade and patience. If you would rather spend money than evenings, look at prepainted plastic or resin terrain instead.
2. Voila Stickers: not a store
When we researched voilastickers.com, it was a blog of practical guides on labels, printing, applying and removing stickers, with an affiliate disclosure in the navigation. Every page where a shipping, returns or contact policy would normally be returned the blog homepage instead. There was no catalog, no prices and no cart. The guides may be useful reading, but you can't order stickers there. If someone sends you a "Voila Stickers" checkout link, check the web address carefully.
How to choose tabletop terrain
Pick your build style
| Style | Upfront cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY foamboard systems | Low per piece after buying plans | High | Crafters running long campaigns |
| 3D printed | Printer plus filament or resin | Medium (print time, cleanup) | Owners of a 3D printer who want detail |
| Prebuilt plastic or resin | High per piece | Low | Groups that want to play now |
| Printed paper or battle maps | Lowest | Low | Flat, quick setups |
Check scale and grid
Most fantasy RPGs and many wargames use roughly 28mm miniatures on a 1-inch grid. Terrain designed for that scale lines up with your battle mat and your minis. TERRAINO is built for 28mm.
Think modular
Modular pieces that click or slot together can be rearranged into new rooms every session. Floors are the base layer, so a floor add-on is a practical early purchase once you own a core system.
Plan storage
Foamboard terrain is light but takes up space. Plan shelves or boxes before you build a whole castle.
How to choose stickers (since our sticker brand isn't selling)
- Material. Paper stickers suit planners and journals. Vinyl suits laptops, water bottles and game boxes. Laminated vinyl lasts longest outdoors.
- Finish. Matte hides glare and fingerprints; glossy makes colors pop; holographic is decorative.
- Durability claims. Look for stated waterproof and UV resistance if stickers will see sun, dishwashers or handling.
- Cut type. Die-cut stickers are cut to the shape of the design; kiss-cut stickers sit on a larger backing sheet, which is easier to peel.
- Custom orders. Choose a shop that shows a digital proof before printing and publishes a reprint policy for color or cut errors.
- Store basics. A real checkout, clear prices, a return policy and contact details. That was exactly what Voila Stickers lacked.
Our verdict
For a tabletop group that likes crafting, GameGearMaster's Essential Core is the lowest-risk way into a large terrain collection, and the 14-day digital refund window lets you test the process. Add the Strongholds or Buildings add-on to match your campaign once you know you enjoy building.
