Boderry and Watch-Modz answer the same question in two different ways. If you want an affordable automatic watch with a sapphire crystal and a decent movement, you can buy one finished from a microbrand like Boderry, or you can build one from Seiko-compatible parts like the ones Watch-Modz sells. Here is how the two compare on price, quality signals and policies, and who should pick which.
The short verdict
- Pick Boderry if you want a finished watch for the least money. A titanium automatic with sapphire crystal starts at $149, which is hard to match by building one yourself.
- Pick Watch-Modz if the building is the point. It has 537 parts for SKX007-style cases and NH35, NH36 and NH38 movements, so you can make a watch nobody else has, and its 30-day return window is far friendlier than Boderry's 8 days.
- If you are not sure your size or style is right, Watch-Modz's policy is more forgiving, but only for unused parts.

Price: what you actually pay for a finished watch
Boderry's pitch is material for the money. The VOYAGER S72 is a 40mm titanium field watch with sapphire crystal, a 72-hour power reserve and 100m water resistance for $149. The SEATURTLE.OCEAN titanium diver adds a ceramic bezel and a titanium bracelet on a TMI NH35 movement for $249. The LANDMASTER GMT, with a Miyota 9075 GMT movement and tritium tubes in a 38mm titanium case, tops the range at $499.
Building a comparable diver from Watch-Modz parts adds up quickly. Using prices from its store:
| Part | Example | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Case | SKX007 Black MM300, 42mm, 200m | $69.99 |
| Crystal | Sapphire with blue AR and date magnifier | $46.99 |
| Bezel | Full bezel | $35.99 |
| Dial | NH36 sterile sunburst black | $19.99 |
| Hands | NH35 Black Samurai, C3 lume | $25.99 |
| Strap | 22mm vulcanized rubber | $39.99 |
| Subtotal | Before movement, crown and chapter ring | $238.94 |
Add a movement, a crown and possibly a chapter ring, plus a watchmaker's fee if you do not assemble it yourself (Watch-Modz's own FAQ recommends professional installation), and a modded SKX lands well above Boderry's $249 titanium diver. On pure spec-per-dollar, Boderry wins.
What you get from the build instead is control. Every dial, handset, bezel and case back is your choice, and the result can be unique.
Quality signals worth knowing
Boderry's movements are a mixed bag for servicing. The TMI NH35 and Miyota 9075 are widely known and easy for watchmakers to service. The HZ8240 and HZ 8046 used in the VOYAGER S72 and HOU H1 are less familiar, which may matter for long-term repairs. The VOYAGER Chronograph uses a hand-wound Seagull ST19, so it stops if you skip winding for about two days. One listing conflict to note: the SEATURTLE diver shows 100m in the description and 20 ATM in the specs, so confirm the depth rating before diving with it.
Watch-Modz's quality depends on assembly. Its cases and case backs are listed as 316L steel with 200m ratings, but water resistance only holds if gaskets are seated correctly and the finished watch is pressure tested. Parts are made for specific movements and case formats: the Black Racer case, for example, will not take SKX007 crystals or bracelets, and SRPD crystals need their own gasket. Check compatibility on every listing.
Policies: the biggest practical difference
Boderry's return policy is its weak spot. You have 8 days from delivery, the watch must be unworn with protective film intact and no screws removed, return shipping is not refunded, and refused deliveries lose 20% of the order value. That leaves little room to decide whether a 40mm case suits your wrist.
Watch-Modz gives 30 days for unused parts in original packaging. You pay return shipping, sale items are final, and exchanges are only for defective parts. "Unused" is tricky with watch parts, since test-fitting a dial or pressing hands may count as use.
On warranty, Boderry advertises a 24-month movement warranty, while we found no published warranty terms for Watch-Modz parts.
Who should pick which
Choose Boderry if:
- You want a ready-to-wear titanium automatic under $250.
- You want a specific complication, like a GMT or a chronograph, without sourcing parts.
- You already know your preferred case size and lug width.
Choose Watch-Modz if:
- You enjoy building and want a one-off design.
- You already own an SKX or Seiko 5 and want to upgrade the crystal, bezel, dial or hands.
- You want time to decide, and can keep parts unused until you are sure.
A note on straps: Watch-Modz's curved-end rubber straps are cut for SKX-shaped cases and may not sit cleanly on other 22mm watches. If you buy a Boderry and want a new look, its own strap series starts at $14.90 for a 20mm Bund leather strap.
