Water and snow gear shares a rule: the conditions decide the spec. A goggle lens that is perfect on a bluebird day is a liability in flat light, a regulator rated for warm water is the wrong tool under ice, and a SUP pump that cannot reach your board's pressure leaves you paddling a noodle. This guide covers the specs that matter for goggles, layers, paddle boarding and scuba, then shows where three brands fit: OutdoorMaster, AKUANA and Beyond Marina.
Snow goggles: lens, fit, and how you will change light
Understand VLT
Visible light transmission (VLT) is the percentage of light a lens lets through. Low VLT (roughly 10% to 20%) suits bright sun; high VLT (50% and up) suits flat light, storms and night skiing. Lens categories S0 to S4 describe the same idea, with S0 the lightest tint and S4 the darkest.
OutdoorMaster's FALCON Custom goggle offers ZEISS lenses from 12.93% to 27% VLT, which is a sunny-to-mixed range, plus a bonus low-light lens for flat days. Its budget Classic goggle lists a 9.4% to 85.1% VLT range across options.
Choose how you will handle changing light
You have two options:
- Interchangeable lenses. Carry a second lens and swap it. Magnetic systems like OutdoorMaster's MagKlick make swaps fast.
- Photochromic lenses. One lens darkens and lightens on its own. OutdoorMaster's PRO Photochromic goggle ($69.99) lists S1 to S3 in about 15 seconds, in S0-S3 or S1-S4 ranges depending on color. Our review notes photochromic lenses react more slowly in cold and in tree runs or tunnels than a quick lens swap.
Get the fit right
If you wear glasses, buy an OTG (over-the-glasses) frame; the FALCON, PRO and Classic models are all listed as OTG. If standard goggles leave a gap at your nose bridge, look for an Asian fit; OutdoorMaster sells its FALCON in that version. Check that the goggle fits your helmet with no gap at the forehead.
Helmets: rotational protection and certification
For skiing and snowboarding, look for a snow-sport certification such as ASTM F2040 in the US or EN 1077 in Europe; bike helmets are certified to different standards. MIPS and similar rotational-protection systems are designed to reduce rotational forces in angled impacts. Note that OutdoorMaster's MIPS helmet in our data, the Rhino Guard at $75.99, is a road cycling helmet with ASTM and CPSC certification, not a ski helmet. Measure your head before ordering, since return shipping on size swaps is on you.
Layers: merino and the details that matter
Merino wool regulates temperature and resists odor over multi-day trips, which is why it is common in ski base layers and socks.
- OutdoorMaster's men's base layer is 100% merino at 175 gsm, a light-to-mid weight, for $89.99.
- Its 4-pack of over-the-calf merino ski socks costs $39.99, about $10 a pair, but the merino percentage of the blend is not stated.
Ski socks should be thin to mid weight and tall enough to sit above the boot cuff. Thick socks often make boots fit worse, not warmer.
Paddle boarding: pump, capacity and what is in the box
Pressure. Inflatable SUPs are typically run at roughly 12 to 15 PSI, and many pumps struggle near the top of that range. OutdoorMaster's SHARK 3 Mini electric pump lists 20 PSI max and 450 L/min airflow, with a built-in 74 Wh battery or 12V car power and eight nozzles, for $179. A cordless pump costs more than a corded 12V model, so the premium buys portability.
Board capacity. Check the board's weight capacity against your weight plus gear, kids or a dog.
Inclusions. Confirm whether the package includes a pump, paddle, leash, fin and bag; missing items add up.
Dry storage. A roll-top dry bag keeps a phone, keys and layers dry. OutdoorMaster's 20 L, 500D PVC bag is $29.99; roll-top seals resist splashes and brief dunks, not long submersion.
Beyond Marina is a paddle board brand we could not verify. Its catalog, prices and policies were not publicly viewable when we researched it, so we cannot recommend it yet. Before ordering a board from any direct brand, get the return policy and warranty in writing and confirm who pays return freight, which can be costly for a bulky board.
Scuba: certification first, then compatibility
Buy scuba gear only after you are certified and, ideally, after trying similar gear on rental. Then check:
- Valve connection. Regulators are DIN or yoke (INT). AKUANA's open water package and Falcon first stages are DIN 300 bar, so you need an adapter for yoke tank valves, common at many warm-water dive centers.
- Water temperature rating. AKUANA's F3 first stage is rated for water above 10°C. For cold water, its Falcon 5 balanced diaphragm first stage ($319) is rated to 4°C, with a -2°C sealed version for ice diving.
- Service access. Regulators need regular servicing. AKUANA lists after-sales service points in Florida, Belgium and the Philippines; ask your local dive shop whether it can service the brand before you buy.
- BCD lift and style. Backplate-and-wing BCDs come in different lift ratings. AKUANA's SONIC travel wing pairs a 350 g carbon backplate with 20, 30 or 40 lb lift for $749; its sidemount wing lists 35 lb lift for $679. If unsure, AKUANA suggests contacting them about lift choice.
AKUANA's complete open water regulator package (F3 first stage, two FN2 second stages, gauge and hoses) costs $599 and is listed with a 5-year warranty.

Where each brand fits
OutdoorMaster is the strongest all-rounder for snow sports and paddle accessories, with free worldwide shipping, a 2-year warranty and detailed specs. Avoid Final Sale clearance goggles unless you are sure of model and fit.
AKUANA suits certified recreational and technical divers who want backplate wings, sidemount rigs and regulators for less than many big-name brands, with an unusually long 90-day return window for unused gear. Its catalog is small, about 40 products, and international buyers should budget for import duties.
Beyond Marina needs more transparency before we can recommend it.
Red flags
- Goggle listings without VLT figures or lens categories.
- Helmets without a named certification for your sport.
- SUP pumps without a max PSI rating.
- Regulators without a temperature rating or a service plan near you.
- Brands whose return and warranty terms you cannot read before paying.
