xTool and AtomStack are two of the most common names people compare when buying a first or second laser engraver. Both sell diode machines for hobbyists and small craft businesses, both run heavy discounts, and both charge you to return a machine you simply changed your mind about. The differences are in the ecosystem around the machine, the return rules in the first two weeks, and how easy it is to keep the machine running for years.
The verdict up front
- Best for beginners and Etsy-style sellers: xTool. It is our overall pick, with the widest machine range we have seen in this category and a materials catalog built around its own machines. Its return policy is also more forgiving in the first 14 days, because you can return a lightly used machine without a service fee.
- Best for tinkerers and long-term repair: AtomStack. It is a close second. It sells nearly every replacement part separately with stated compatibility, publishes a clear one-year warranty on new machines, and runs a refurbished section with deep markdowns.
- Best for metal and non-metal marking on small items: a tie that depends on budget. AtomStack's M4 Pro pairs a 10W diode with a 2W infrared source in one unit. xTool's lineup includes fiber, infrared and MOPA machines, plus the F2 Ultra UV for glass and crystal.

Catalog and ecosystem
xTool is built as a closed loop. Its store sells the lasers, the jigs and the blanks, and many materials are labeled for a specific machine with ready-set parameters. If you own an xTool, that saves trial and error. Examples from our research: an 80 mm flat-bottom K9 crystal ball for the F2 Ultra UV at $21.99, an M2 CleanCut panel at $39 that protects the base plate when cutting through soft materials, and UV DTF film sets for the O1 Omni Printer at $69.99. The median catalog price is $19.99 because materials dominate the store. The tradeoff is that some material kits are vague: the $79.99 M2 Deluxe Home DIY Kit does not list its contents.
AtomStack is built around keeping machines running. It sells modules, belts, fans, limit switch boards and bed kits individually, each with a compatibility line. A 6W blue laser module is $69, an A24 X-axis belt is $10, and a 21-slat aluminum blade bed for the Hurricane is $59 refurbished. The catch is that compatibility is narrow; the A20 Pro V2 module, for example, fits only the gunmetal model, so read every part listing closely. Some listings, including the refurbished Swift Mini, have almost no specs, so verify laser power and condition before buying.
Machines we can compare on paper
AtomStack's M4 Pro is the most specific machine in our data: a 10W diode plus a 2W 1064 nm infrared source, a 100 by 100 mm work area, up to 5,000 mm/s, and listed cutting depths of 8 mm wood and 5 mm black acrylic, at $1,149 to $1,269. The small work area makes it a production marker for tags, jewelry and gifts, not a sign-making machine.
xTool's machine lineup is broader than AtomStack's: the enclosed S1 and the M2 with color printing for beginners, the F2 Ultra line for glass, crystal and metal, plus CO2, fiber and MOPA options. Our review data does not include current prices for those machines, so compare them directly on xTool's store, and remember that inner engraving of crystal needs a UV or similar specialized laser, not a standard diode or CO2 machine.
Returns: the most important difference
Both brands charge for non-defective returns, but the shape of the fee matters.
xTool gives you 30 days from delivery. In the first 14 days there is no service fee, though you pay return shipping. From day 15 to 30, a non-defective return costs 10% to 30% of the order total depending on condition, and a machine must have lasered fewer than 50 times. Separately bought materials and filters cannot be returned.
AtomStack only accepts unopened machines for return, within 15 calendar days, with a 10% service charge plus return shipping. Exchanges must be requested within 30 days with an RMA form, and anything sent without one will not be processed. Open-box items are final sale.
In practice, xTool lets you actually try the machine for two weeks and send it back with only shipping costs. AtomStack expects you to decide before you open the box.
Warranty and long-term ownership
AtomStack is clearer here: one year on new machines and accessories from the invoice date, six months on open-box and three months on refurbished, non-transferable. xTool offers free repair or replacement within its warranty period, starting with remote troubleshooting, but the text we captured does not state the period length, so confirm it for your machine before buying.
For owners who like to fix things themselves, AtomStack's parts catalog is the stronger long-term argument. For owners who want everything to work together out of the box, xTool's ecosystem is.
Who should pick which
Pick xTool if you:
- are buying your first laser and want the option to return it after trying it
- sell crafts and want lasers, jigs and blanks from one supplier with matched settings
- need glass, crystal, metal or printing capability under one brand
Pick AtomStack if you:
- want the lowest entry price and are comfortable with refurbished units and a shorter warranty
- expect to replace modules, belts and boards yourself over the years
- want a dual diode-plus-infrared marker for small metal and non-metal items, like the M4 Pro
Before you buy either
- Budget for laser safety glasses and ventilation or a purifier if your model does not include them.
- Judge the price you pay, not the markdown. Our xTool review flagged inflated-looking compare-at prices on some small items, and AtomStack's refurbished section shows very large gaps between list and sale prices.
- Outside the US, use your regional xTool storefront; AtomStack ships from US and German warehouses.
- Avoid AtomStack pre-orders if you need the machine soon; delivery can take 30 to 90 days.
