Buying decor online is easy until the duvet cover doesn't fit your comforter, the rug can't be returned, or the "handmade" basket turns out to be a slightly different size than the photo. Artisan goods and trend decor fail in different ways, so the checklist below covers both. We built it from what we found reviewing three very different stores: Roomtery (aesthetic room decor), MyTindy (Moroccan crafts) and AMAKA Africa (handmade Ugandan home goods).
Step 1: Decide whether you want a look or a piece
There are two kinds of decor buyer, and they need different stores.
- Buying a look. You want a cottagecore bedroom, a dark academia desk or a kawaii dorm, and you want the pieces to match. Curated trend stores work well here. Roomtery groups 1,241 products by aesthetic, with a median price of $23.99, so you can build a room quickly on a small budget.
- Buying a piece. You want one rug, throw or serving board that will last and that has a story behind it. Artisan stores fit better. MyTindy sells Beni Ourain rugs, hand screen-printed cushions and ceramics from Moroccan makers. AMAKA Africa sells hand-loomed cotton, carved wood and upcycled cow horn made in Uganda.
Knowing which one you are doing stops you from overpaying for a trend item or under-researching a four-figure rug.
Step 2: Read the materials line, then believe it
Materials tell you how a piece will feel, wear and clean.
- Bedding: Roomtery names fabrics on its listings, from 100% polyester on the Sage Forest Kitty set to a cotton seersucker blend on the Juicy Cherry set. Polyester is easy care but can sleep warmer than cotton.
- Rugs: a hand-spun, naturally dyed wool rug like MyTindy's Beni Mrirt (€1,061.20) is a different object from a tufted polyester novelty rug like Roomtery's Digital Watch rug ($39.99). Both are fine. They are not substitutes.
- Natural materials: horn, wood and soapstone vary piece to piece. AMAKA's listings say so plainly, and that is a good sign. Expect your napkin rings or earrings not to match the photo exactly.
Watch for listings that contradict themselves. Our notes on MyTindy's Rchima Design pouches flag copy that says 100% cotton while the composition line says an 80/20 recycled cotton and polyester blend.
Step 3: Measure before you buy, especially bedding
This is the most common decor mistake we see, and it is very fixable.
| Item | What to check | Example from our research |
|---|---|---|
| Duvet covers | Size system (EU vs US) | Roomtery's Queen duvet is 79 x 90 in, smaller than a typical US queen cover |
| Fitted sheets | Mattress dimensions | Roomtery's Twin fitted is 47 x 79 in, wider than a US twin |
| Rugs | Finished size and placement | MyTindy's Beni Ourain is 318 x 195 cm, about 10.4 x 6.4 ft |
| Throws | Throw vs bed blanket | AMAKA's Kilombera throw is about 145 x 160 cm |
| Accent rugs | Accent vs room rug | Roomtery's Digital Watch rug is 31.5 x 16.5 in |
If a listing has no dimensions at all, ask before ordering, particularly for anything final sale.
Step 4: Check where it ships from and how long it takes
All three stores in this guide ship slower than mainstream retail:
- Roomtery: ships in 2 to 5 business days, then 8 to 14 days to the US. Free standard shipping to the US, Canada, Australia and the EU.
- MyTindy: 5 to 10 days of processing in Morocco because items are inspected first, then 7 to 10 business days standard or 2 to 4 express via FedEx, UPS or DHL. Shipping rates appear only at checkout, prices are in euros, and import charges may apply.
- AMAKA Africa: in-stock items ship within 2 business days, with Ground at 7 to 10 business days or Premium at 4 to 6. Free US shipping over $50. Some items are pre-order.
For a move-in date or a holiday gift, order at least three weeks out.
Step 5: Read the return policy before you fall in love
Decor return policies vary more than almost any other category.
- AMAKA Africa is the most generous we reviewed: 30 days, free US return labels, unused items in original packaging. Sample sale items are final.
- Roomtery gives 30 days with no restocking fee, but you pay return shipping to a European warehouse, and a long list can't be returned at all: sale items, comforters, duvets, insert pillows, wall prints, some tapestries, furniture, area rugs and gift cards.
- MyTindy gives only 14 days, sale items can't be refunded, and exchanges are only for defective or damaged items. Parts of the policy read like template text, so email to confirm terms before buying a rug.
Rule of thumb: the more expensive and less returnable the item, the more you should confirm in writing first.
Step 6: Weigh the maker story honestly
Fair-trade and social-enterprise claims matter to many buyers, and some stores back them with detail. AMAKA's about page describes partnering with artisan businesses on quality, safety and labor standards, paying above-market prices and prioritizing businesses that employ women, and many listings name the community that made the item. MyTindy frames much of its range as fair-trade gifts and usually states where items were made. We have not audited supply chains, so treat these as the stores' own claims, but specific, named sourcing is more credible than a generic "ethically made" badge.
Step 7: Set a budget by role, not by room
- Accents under $35: Roomtery night lights from $14.99 to $34.99, AMAKA horn ornaments at $10, horn napkin rings at $32 for six.
- Textiles $40 to $130: AMAKA placemats at $40 for four, Roomtery bedding sets from about $78 to $130, MyTindy cushion covers from €58.88.
- Investment pieces: AMAKA's hand-carved charcuterie board at $225, MyTindy wool rugs above €1,000.
Spend on the piece you touch every day (bedding, a throw, a rug) and save on accents you may replace when trends move.
Which store fits you
- Choose Roomtery for affordable trend decor for a dorm, teen room or first apartment, if you can wait two weeks and accept a strict non-returnable list.
- Choose AMAKA Africa, our strongest pick of the three, for handmade gifts and tableware with clear sourcing, free US returns and natural variation you will enjoy rather than mind.
- Choose MyTindy for Moroccan rugs, hand-printed cushions and ceramics, if you are comfortable with euro pricing, a 14-day return window and confirming terms by email before a big purchase.
