Jewelry from AliExpress is cheap, enormous in range and very hit or miss. Rings, chains and earrings are listed by thousands of small stores, and the metal claims on them are mostly unverifiable at the prices charged. This guide explains how to read those claims, how to size a ring in millimeters before you order, and which rings, earrings, chokers and bracelets from our AliExpress research are worth a look. For how the marketplace works overall, see our AliExpress review.
How to read metal claims
At a few dollars, the words in a listing title are the seller's claims, and nothing on the page verifies them. Here is how to treat the common ones.
Stainless steel. This is the most sensible material to look for on a budget. It holds up to daily wear better than plating and does not flake. But "stainless steel" in a title is still a claim, and grade numbers such as 316L are claims too. If you have sensitive skin or a nickel allergy, ask the seller before ordering or choose another material.
Gold-plated, gold-tone, or "18K". Plating is a thin metal layer over a different metal, and it wears at the places that touch skin and clothing. Expect a plated ring to dull faster than a plated earring. A listing that says "18K" at a plated price is describing a finish, not solid gold. Treat gold-tone as costume jewelry.
"925" or sterling silver. The number means 92.5% silver, but a stamp in a photo proves nothing. A ring that costs only a few dollars deserves skepticism about silver content. Check for a 925 or S925 stamp inside the band when it arrives. A magnet test proves nothing, because brass and copper are non-magnetic too. If silver matters to you, buy from a source that can show a hallmark and offers a clear return policy.
Moissanite. It is a real gem material that sparkles more than cubic zirconia, but a listing rarely gives stone size, grade or a certificate. "Test passed" usually refers to a diamond tester, which many moissanite stones pass, so it suggests the stone is not glass or CZ and nothing more. A carat figure in the title that does not match the stone size, such as 1.5CT next to a single 4mm stone, is a reason to ask the seller what it means. Ask for a report number if it matters.
Other gemstones, "diamond", and "zircon". At these prices, assume imitation stones: cubic zirconia, glass or acrylic. That is fine if you want sparkle on a budget. It is a problem only if the listing implies a real stone.
"Hypoallergenic" and "tarnish-free". These are marketing phrases. They are worth a question to the seller, not worth paying extra for.
Size a ring in millimeters
Sizing is the main reason jewelry orders go wrong, and it matters more on AliExpress because exchanges are slow. Sellers often list ring sizes as inner diameter in mm, or in a mix of US and other systems, so measure in mm first.
- Wrap a thin strip of paper or a non-stretch string around the base of the finger you will wear it on.
- Mark the overlap and lay the strip flat against a metal ruler. That gives circumference in mm.
- Divide by 3.14 to get inner diameter in mm, and compare with the listing's chart.
- Measure late in the day, when fingers are largest, and pick the next size up if you are between sizes.
A metric stainless-steel ruler or a retractable body tape (centimeters) is all you need. Here is a rough US-to-mm guide:
| US ring size | Inner diameter | Circumference |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | about 16.5 mm | about 51.9 mm |
| 7 | about 17.3 mm | about 54.4 mm |
| 8 | about 18.1 mm | about 56.9 mm |
| 9 | about 18.9 mm | about 59.5 mm |
Treat this as a starting point. Always use the seller's own size chart if it differs, since small stores use different standards. For necklaces and bracelets, check the length in cm or inches in the listing options, and measure your wrist or neck with the same tape.
How to pick a seller
For jewelry, the seller matters more than the product page. From the checks we recommend across AliExpress:
- Look for roughly 90% positive feedback or better, and check the three sub-scores for "as described," communication and shipping speed.
- Prefer stores with hundreds or thousands of orders, not a handful, and a store that has been open for a while.
- Read reviews with buyer photos. A ring that looks fine in the studio shot but dull in customer photos tells you what the plating is like.
- Skip anything carrying a famous jewelry or fashion name at a very low price. AliExpress has appeared on a US government list of markets known for counterfeits, and branded goods at implausible prices are the clearest warning.
What we would buy, and what we would skip
Reasonable buys: inexpensive silver-claim and stainless pieces from well-rated stores, bought as fashion jewelry; moissanite rings from sellers who will share a certificate or report number; and accessories that are honest costume pieces, such as a fabric or pearl-look choker.
Be careful with: "925," gold and moissanite claims; rings with no millimeter size chart; eternity or full-stone bands, which are hard to resize; personalized pieces, which usually restrict returns; and earrings, because the post material is often not stated and return terms can differ by item. Check the listing before you pay.
Skip: designer lookalikes, jewelry sold as gold or silver "investment" pieces, and anything where the title and photos do not agree.
About the picks
The picks span three price tiers. Under about $3 are the flower ring, the stainless couple ring, the statement earrings, the pearl-look choker and the braided bracelet. Treat all of them as fashion jewelry, and note that the earrings and choker have 93% positive feedback, a bit below most listings. In the middle, around $3 to $7, are a platinum-plated CZ stacking ring and a full-zircon band, both with 98% feedback per seller data. At the top of this list, at about $9 to $20, are two moissanite rings: ask each seller for a certificate or report number before you rely on the stone claim. Prices are what the listings showed during our research and change often.
Shipping, duties and returns
AliExpress has said Choice orders to the US take 5 to 12 days and others 8 to 14, and the listings we reviewed suggest one to three weeks for most small items. Small imports are no longer duty-free in the US, so the final total can be higher than the listed price. Check the checkout breakdown for import charges, which show up either built into the price or as a line item.
If an order does not arrive, comes damaged or is not as described, open a dispute from your order page. The reported dispute window is up to 15 days after delivery, and eligible items can be returned free within 90 days, with the first return on an order free. Those terms have changed over time, so confirm them on the listing. For current promotions, see AliExpress coupons and deals.
