The best things to buy on AliExpress are small, simple and cheap: items where a bad one costs you a couple of dollars and a good one does the job. The worst things to buy are branded goods, safety-critical electronics and anything that has to fit you perfectly. This guide sorts the site's endless listings into both groups, using our research on listings, order counts and seller feedback. We did not use or test any of these products. For the wider picture on how the marketplace works, see our AliExpress review.
Why cheap and simple wins
AliExpress is a marketplace run by Alibaba Group, where mostly small sellers in China ship single items to shoppers worldwide. It does not sell its own stock, so quality depends on the seller and the item. That makes the site good for:
- Passive items with no electronics or chemistry: tape, tools, organizers, cloths.
- Commodity items where brand does not matter: cable winders, phone stands, atomizer bottles.
- Items under about $5, where shipping time is the main cost of a mistake.
It is risky for anything where the listing claim is the product: a rating, a certification, a size, a brand.

The best categories
Small household fixes
Utility items win on AliExpress because they solve one job. The front-load washer drain pan has over 56,000 orders and 98% positive feedback, per seller data. The catch is clearance, so measure the gap under your filter door before ordering. The magnetic grabber has over 86,000 orders, but a magnet only picks up iron and steel, so it will not retrieve aluminum, brass or plastic parts.
Tapes and adhesives
Thin double-sided mesh tape is popular for renters and crafters. Use it for light jobs only: length, width and weight rating are not stated on the listing, and "traceless" performance depends on the surface. Test it on a spare patch of painted wall, and never trust it with a heavy or valuable object. The most-ordered heavy-duty tapes can have lower feedback, so read the score before you buy.
Cleaning cloths and car care
Microfiber cloths are the classic AliExpress buy. Size and thickness (GSM) are rarely stated, so treat them as everyday cloths. Wash them without fabric softener, which clogs the fibers, and shake out grit before wiping paint.
Desk, phone and cable tidying
A silicone cable organizer, a cord winder and a foldable phone stand each cost around a dollar, and each has tens of thousands of orders. The risk is that clips can lose grip on dusty edges and stands can wobble with a thick phone case. For cables and gadgets that go beyond tidying, see our AliExpress tech finds.
Travel and small extras
Empty 5ml atomizers are handy for carrying a little fragrance. Aluminum bottles can leak if the pump is loose, and a funnel makes filling easier. The elastic belt is a smooth, buckle-free option for light clothing, but it will not carry heavy loads like tools.
Lights and novelty
A sunset projection lamp is a cheap mood light and photo prop. It needs a USB power source and works best in a dark room. Expect a novelty, not a studio light.
What NOT to buy on AliExpress
These are the categories where the risk is higher than the savings.
- Brand-name items. AliExpress has appeared on a US government list of markets known for counterfeits, and a 2025 independent investigation of purchases across several Chinese marketplaces judged many of the items likely counterfeit. A famous brand at an implausible price is a warning sign. Buying from a store the brand itself runs is the exception, and even then, check.
- Wall chargers and other safety-critical electronics. Chargers, power strips and battery-powered gear should state a safety mark such as UL or ETL. Many cheap listings do not, and a listed wattage is a claim, not a test result. Our tech finds guide explains fake wattage and capacity claims.
- Anything you need fast. Standard orders take one to three weeks, and AliExpress's own promise for Choice orders is 5 to 12 days. If it has to arrive for an event, buy locally.
- Anything sized without a chart. Clothing, shoes, rings and watches with no size chart are a return waiting to happen. If you must, measure yourself in cm or mm and compare against the listing. See our AliExpress watches guide and jewelry guide for sizing.
- Cosmetics, supplements and children's products. Safety certification is unclear on many of these listings. Buyer Protection summaries also say hygiene and health items are excluded from refunds, though you should confirm current terms.
- Metal and gem claims. "925," "18K," "diamond" and "genuine" at a few dollars are seller claims you cannot check from a listing.
- Big, heavy or fragile items. Shipping, damage and returns get expensive fast.
How to pick a seller
Seller quality matters more than the product title. Aim for about 90% positive feedback or better, with strong "as described," communication and shipping scores. Prefer stores with hundreds or thousands of orders and some history, since new stores can be relaunched after bad ratings. Read reviews with buyer photos, and treat copied or vague listings as a red flag.
Shipping, duties and returns
Choice listings are run by AliExpress, which handles shipping and customer service, and tend to arrive sooner. Listings marked as shipping from a US warehouse skip international transit. Small imports are no longer duty-free in the US, so the final total can be higher than the listed price. The checkout page shows import charges either built into the price or as a separate line, and there is no single rate.
If an order does not arrive, is damaged or is not as described, open a dispute from your order page. Reported terms allow disputes up to 15 days after delivery, and eligible items can be returned free within 90 days, with the first return on an order free. Confirm the terms on the listing, since they have changed before. For promotions, including the big annual sales, see AliExpress coupons and deals.
The short version
Buy cheap, passive, simple things from well-rated sellers, and skip anything where a spec, a brand or a size has to be right. If you are shopping for gifts, stocking stuffers under $5 has more ideas, and if you are choosing between wholesale and retail, read Alibaba vs AliExpress.
