Amazon is the better choice when you need something fast, want easy returns, or are buying something that matters (a charger for a child's device, a part you need this week). AliExpress is the better choice when you want a niche or very cheap item and are happy to wait a couple of weeks. Import charges can narrow the price gap, so the real question is how much your time and your risk tolerance are worth.
This guide compares the two on delivery, returns, buyer protection, price and product risk, then lists the kinds of purchases where each one wins.
AliExpress vs Amazon at a glance
| | AliExpress | Amazon |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Marketplace of mostly independent sellers, many in China | Retailer plus third-party sellers |
| Typical US delivery | Own 2024 promise: Choice 5 to 12 days, others 8 to 14; real-world standard often 15 to 30 days; US-warehouse items about 3 to 7 business days | Much faster for domestic-stocked and Prime-eligible items, typically days rather than weeks |
| Returns | Free return within 90 days on eligible items, first return per order free (2024 terms); seller-shipped items vary | Standard 30-day returns on many items, with an extended window at holiday time |
| Problem claims | Buyer Protection dispute, reported window about 15 days after delivery | A-to-z Guarantee covers third-party seller orders for late, damaged or not-as-described items, claim window about 90 days from the order |
| Price on generic goods | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Selection | Huge range of niche, hobby, repair and accessory items | Huge range of mainstream and branded items |
Delivery is where Amazon wins
If you need it this week, order from Amazon. AliExpress's own 2024 US promise was 5 to 12 calendar days for Choice orders and 8 to 14 for non-Choice orders. Independent 2026 shipping guides report slower real-world numbers: roughly 15 to 30 days for standard shipping and 5 to 10 business days for Choice. Items marked "Ship from United States" come from local stock and take about 3 to 7 business days, so filter for them if speed matters.
Amazon items that ship from a US warehouse are in a different league for speed. If you are buying for a deadline, a birthday, a trip, or a repair that cannot wait, the AliExpress savings will not matter.
One more point: on AliExpress, the estimated arrival date shown at checkout is your best guide. If a Choice or Ship from United States option exists for the item you want, it can close some of the gap.
Returns and protection
Amazon's standard return window is 30 days on many items, extended at holiday time. If you buy from a third-party seller on Amazon and something goes wrong, the A-to-z Guarantee covers late, damaged or not-as-described orders, with a claim window of about 90 days from the order date.
AliExpress is a mix. Eligible items can be returned free within 90 days of payment, with the first return on each parent order free, which is a longer window than Amazon's. But the free return mainly applies to Choice and eligible items, and for other seller-shipped items return shipping can fall on you unless the item arrived wrong or damaged. For non-delivery or an item that is not as described, you open a Buyer Protection dispute on the order page, and the reported window is up to 15 days after delivery. That is shorter than Amazon's claim window, so inspect orders promptly.
Those AliExpress figures come from its 2024 US announcement and summaries, so confirm the current terms before relying on them. Custom items, perishables and hygiene or health products are usually excluded.
Price: still lower on AliExpress for generic goods
For generic items such as cables, tape, tools, organizers and small accessories, AliExpress prices are usually lower than Amazon's. Our picks sell for roughly $1 to $3. Since the US $800 duty-free exemption for low-value imports ended (May 2, 2025 for China and Hong Kong, August 29, 2025 for all countries), some of that gap is eaten by import charges. On AliExpress those may be built into the item price, shown as an estimated line at checkout, or occasionally collected by the carrier at delivery. State sales tax is also collected at checkout. No single rate applies, so compare final totals.
Also, "was" prices on AliExpress are often inflated list prices. A listing "down from $3.30" may never have sold at $3.30, so judge the actual price.
Product risk exists on both
It is easy to assume Amazon is automatically safe and AliExpress automatically risky. The truth is more mixed. Amazon also has third-party counterfeit problems. AliExpress was added to the US Trade Representative's Notorious Markets list in 2022 over trademark counterfeiting and copyright piracy concerns.
For categories where safety certification matters (chargers, batteries, children's products, supplements, cosmetics), we would rather pay more and buy from a seller or brand you can verify, on either site. For plain mechanical or low-stakes items (a tape, a tweezer, a phone stand), the risk of getting a mediocre product is mostly a matter of a few dollars.
On AliExpress you can improve your odds by choosing stores with 90 percent or higher positive feedback, many orders, and reviews with buyer photos. Be skeptical of branded goods at implausibly low prices.
Who should buy where
Buy on Amazon when:
- You need it within days
- It is a safety-sensitive item (charger, power bank, baby product)
- You want the longest and simplest path to a refund without shipping a package overseas
- The price difference is a dollar or two
Buy on AliExpress when:
- It is a cheap, low-risk accessory or hobby part
- The item is niche enough that Amazon sells fewer options
- You can wait and the savings add up (for example, buying several things at once)
- You are comfortable checking seller ratings
A reasonable rule of thumb: buy on AliExpress when a dud would cost you only a few dollars, and on Amazon when a dud would cost you time or safety.
Examples where AliExpress makes sense
The picks above are cheap, simple items with very large order counts: a heat-shrink tubing assortment for wiring projects, a washing machine drain pan, a cable organizer and a braided USB-C cable. They cost a couple of dollars each, so even if one is a dud, you have lost the price of a coffee. Compare that with a charger or a device you would rely on, where the Amazon return process is worth the extra money. Bottom line
Amazon wins on speed, simplicity and fallback protection. AliExpress wins on price and on odd, specific items you cannot easily find elsewhere. Use Amazon for anything urgent or safety-related, and use AliExpress for cheap, low-stakes extras where waiting a couple of weeks is no problem.
