Neither is better across the board: Temu is the simpler, more app-driven store with a flat return policy, while AliExpress is a broader marketplace with more independent sellers and more niche items. Temu is owned by PDD Holdings (the parent of Pinduoduo) and AliExpress by Alibaba Group, and in 2026 both mostly ship from overseas to the US, both involve import costs, and both reward patience.

Here is how they compare on what decides a purchase: how each site is run, returns, shipping, prices after the tariff changes, and what each is best for.

Temu vs AliExpress at a glance

| | Temu | AliExpress |

|---|---|---|

| Parent company | PDD Holdings (Pinduoduo's parent) | Alibaba Group |

| How it works | Historically a "fully managed" model where Temu controls pricing and logistics, plus a "semi-managed" model with merchants holding overseas stock | Marketplace of independent sellers, plus the AliExpress-run Choice program |

| Returns | Free return within 90 days of purchase on most items (some are shorter); first return per order free, later returns from the same order cost $7.99 plus tax | Up to 90 days on eligible items, first return per order free (per its 2024 US terms) |

| Buyer protection | Temu's own refund policy | Buyer Protection disputes, reported window about 15 days after delivery |

| Seller variety | Mostly products Temu manages | Many independent stores, each with its own feedback score |

| Best for | Simple checkout and returns, everyday household and fashion buys | Niche gadgets, tools, electronics accessories, hobby parts, very cheap single items |

How the two business models differ

The biggest structural difference is who is in charge of the order. Temu grew on a fully managed model, where Temu itself controlled logistics and pricing. That model made up about 90 percent of its US business before 2025. After the US changed its rules on low-value imports in 2025, Temu stopped direct China-to-US shipping of fully managed goods in late April and May 2025 and shifted toward US-warehouse and local-seller fulfilment.

AliExpress works differently. It is a marketplace where independent sellers list their own products, set their own prices and often run their own stores. AliExpress also operates Choice, a labeled program where AliExpress, rather than the individual seller, handles shipping and customer service. Our AliExpress review explains how that fits together.

What that means for you: on Temu you are mostly dealing with one company's policies. On AliExpress you are dealing with AliExpress's rules plus a different seller on every listing, so choosing the seller matters more.

Returns and refunds

Temu's published policy gives you a free return within 90 days of purchase on most items, with some categories shorter. The first return on each order is free; later returns from the same order cost $7.99 plus tax. That is easy to understand, and for many shoppers it is the main reason to prefer Temu.

AliExpress is more layered. Eligible items can be returned free within 90 days of payment, with the first return on each parent order free, but the free return applies mainly to Choice and other eligible items. Seller-shipped items outside Choice can mean buyer-paid return shipping unless the product arrived wrong or damaged. For problems like non-delivery, damage or an item not as described, you open a Buyer Protection dispute from the order page, reported to be possible for up to 15 days after delivery. Our figures reflect AliExpress's 2024 US announcement and may have changed, so check the terms on the specific listing.

Verdict on returns: Temu is simpler and easier to predict. AliExpress works well when you buy Choice items or stick to well-rated sellers.

Shipping to the US

Neither site is a two-day service for most items.

  • AliExpress: its own 2024 US promise was 5 to 12 calendar days for Choice and 8 to 14 for other orders. Third-party 2026 guides report standard shipping closer to 15 to 30 days, Choice at roughly 5 to 10 business days, and "Ship from United States" items at about 3 to 7 business days. Treat these as ranges, not guarantees.
  • Temu: US-warehouse items are domestic shipments, but we could not verify current 2026 delivery times, so check the estimated arrival date shown at checkout.

If speed matters, filter AliExpress for Choice or Ship from United States and compare the estimated delivery date to Temu's for the same product.

Prices, tariffs and import fees

Both Temu and Shein raised US prices in April and May 2025 after the tariff changes, and Temu's US daily sales and users fell sharply in that period. We could not verify AliExpress-specific price data, so do not assume either site is cheaper across the board.

What changed for every low-value import: the US $800 duty-free threshold ended for China and Hong Kong on May 2, 2025 and for all countries on August 29, 2025. On AliExpress, import charges may be built into the item price, shown as a separate estimated line, or occasionally collected by the carrier at delivery. State sales tax is collected at checkout for US buyers. Because no single rate applies, compare the final checkout total, not the sticker price.

Quality and counterfeit risk

Both sites sell a mix of good and poor products. AliExpress was added to the US Trade Representative's Notorious Markets list in 2022 over counterfeiting concerns. A 2025 think-tank investigation that bought 51 items from Temu, AliExpress and Shein judged 24 likely counterfeit, across categories such as cosmetics, toys, luxury goods, pharmaceuticals and household items. That is a small sample, but the lesson holds for both: avoid famous brands at implausible prices, and be careful with chargers, children's products, supplements and cosmetics.

On AliExpress you can improve your odds by shopping from stores with 90 percent or higher positive feedback, hundreds or thousands of orders, and reviews that include buyer photos.

When to choose each

Pick Temu if:

  • You want one account with one simple return rule
  • You are buying everyday household, fashion or gift items
  • The estimated delivery date and total look better than AliExpress for the same product

Pick AliExpress if:

  • You want niche items: tools, electronic parts, hobby supplies, accessories
  • You like comparing sellers and reading buyer photos
  • You can use Choice or Ship from United States to speed things up
  • You are chasing the very cheapest single item and can wait

A good habit is to search for the same item on both and compare the delivered price and delivery date. Be skeptical of "was" prices on either site, since list prices are often inflated.

Cheap items where AliExpress holds up

The picks above show where AliExpress tends to make sense: very cheap, simple items that sell in huge numbers, such as a $1 to $2 cable organizer, a 100W-rated USB-C cable at around $2, ESD tweezers and a $3 washing machine drain pan. They are cheap enough that slow delivery is the main cost. For more ideas see the best things to buy on AliExpress, and check AliExpress coupons and deals for current offers. If speed is your priority, our AliExpress vs Amazon comparison makes the case for paying more to get it fast.

Bottom line

Temu wins on a simple, predictable return policy and a one-company experience. AliExpress wins on selection of odd, specific and very cheap items, as long as you pick sellers carefully. The 2025 tariff changes touched both shops, so compare final totals rather than assuming either one is cheaper.
