For clothes, Shein is usually the better pick: it is a fashion-first store with a clear return policy and a catalog built around sizes, outfits and trends. For almost everything else (gadgets, tools, home fixes, beauty tools, accessories, hobby parts), AliExpress is the stronger option because it is a general marketplace with thousands of independent sellers. The two overlap on small accessories, and that is where the choice is closest.
Here is how they compare on what each sells, returns, shipping, price after the tariff changes, and who should shop where.

What each site is actually for
Shein is a fashion retailer first. Its catalog is dominated by clothing, with beauty, home and accessories around the edges. Because the supply is mostly managed by Shein, a product page looks and works the same way from item to item.
AliExpress is a marketplace. Its listings run from phone cables to welding clamps to hair accessories, and each is sold by an independent store with its own feedback score. Clothing exists there, but sizing runs by seller, so you need to check each seller's size chart. Our AliExpress review explains how the marketplace is organized.
So the question is not which site is better, but what you are buying. A dress or a jacket that needs to fit belongs on Shein, where returns are easier to predict. A shoe-washing bag, a cable winder or a phone stand belongs on AliExpress, where the item is cheap and simple enough that fit does not matter.
Returns: Shein is clearer for clothing
Shein's reported US policy is returns within 30 days of delivery, with the first return per order free and later returns carrying a $6.99 fee that is deducted from the refund. Many categories (lingerie, jewelry and clearance items, for example) are final sale. That is a short window next to AliExpress's, but it is simple, and it is built for the sort of purchase where returns are common.
AliExpress offers a longer window on eligible items: free return within 90 days of payment, first return per parent order free, according to its 2024 US terms. But the free return mainly applies to Choice and eligible items, and return terms differ for other sellers, so you may be paying return shipping on an item you simply did not like. If something does not arrive, arrives damaged or is not as described, you open a Buyer Protection dispute on the order page; the reported window is about 15 days after delivery. Hygiene and health items, custom goods and perishables are usually excluded, which matters for personal-care purchases.
For clothes that may need to go back, Shein is the safer choice. For a one-dollar organizer you will not return anyway, AliExpress's rules barely matter.
Shipping to the US
Neither is fast. AliExpress's own 2024 US promise was 5 to 12 calendar days for Choice orders and 8 to 14 for others. Independent 2026 guides put standard AliExpress shipping at roughly 15 to 30 days, Choice at about 5 to 10 business days, and Ship from United States items at about 3 to 7 business days. Shein ships from China and some US warehouses, but we could not verify current delivery times, so use the estimated arrival date shown at checkout.
Price and import fees after 2025
The US $800 duty-free exemption for low-value imports ended for China and Hong Kong on May 2, 2025, and for all countries on August 29, 2025. Both Shein and Temu raised US prices in April and May 2025, and Shein's US sales fell about 8 percent year over year in September 2025 after the exemption ended, according to third-party tracking. On AliExpress, import charges may be built into the item price, appear as an estimated line at checkout or, occasionally, be collected by the carrier at delivery. State sales tax is collected at checkout. Because no single rate applies, compare the final total rather than the listed price.
Quality and risk
Fashion adds its own quality question: fabric, stitching and sizing. We have not tested items from either site, and we do not claim to know how any particular garment fits, so rely on the size chart, measure yourself, and read buyer photos where they exist.
On AliExpress, check that the store has 90 percent or higher positive feedback and a few hundred orders or more. AliExpress was added to the US Trade Representative's Notorious Markets list in 2022 over counterfeiting concerns, so be skeptical of name-brand goods at implausibly low prices. A 2025 think-tank investigation that bought 51 items across Temu, AliExpress and Shein judged 24 likely counterfeit, so the same caution applies to Shein.
For cosmetics and skincare, safety certification is often unclear on low-cost listings. Patch-test anything new on both sites and think twice before putting a very cheap unlabeled product on your face.
Who should shop where
Choose Shein if:
- You are buying clothing, swimwear or outfits that might need to go back
- You want one clear return rule
- You like browsing by style and trend
Choose AliExpress if:
- You are buying accessories, grooming tools, home fixes or hobby supplies
- You want the cheapest single-item price and can wait
- You do not need to return it, or the item costs so little that returns do not matter
- You like comparing sellers
Small accessories where AliExpress holds up
The picks above show where AliExpress competes with a fashion-focused retailer: an invisible elastic belt at around $1.50 with tens of thousands of orders, a big pack of face acne patches at around $1, a shoe-washing laundry bag and an extra-long shoe horn. They are cheap, simple and low in fit risk. For more of this kind of buy, see the best things to buy on AliExpress, and look at AliExpress coupons and deals before checking out. If you are comparing other shopping options, Temu vs AliExpress and AliExpress vs Amazon cover those head to head.
Bottom line
Shein wins on clothes and on return clarity. AliExpress wins on range, price on tiny items, and anything that is not fashion. Many shoppers will use both: Shein for what they wear, AliExpress for the cheap gadget or accessory that completes it.
